Student life is the seed-time of life. Hence, it is the most important period of our life. Our future hopes depend on it. What we sow here, we reap in advanced age. At this time our mind is like wet clay. The potter makes various things with wet clay on his wheel. Like clay, our mind can be shaped in different ways.
The pots once made by the potter cannot be changed into other shapes whether we like or not. Similarly, our character, once formed in one way, cannot be changed easily later on. If we receive good training in our student life, we will be good citizens in our future lives. We should, therefore, be very careful about training in this period of life.
The first and foremost duty of a student is to pay due attention to his lessons—reading and writing. We must gain knowledge in different subjects, not only from textbooks but also from books of choice or liking.
Our character must be good. People love men of good character. It is built by the cultivation of good habits. Actually, a man is a bundle of good habits. All our qualities are but the result of the habits formed in our early years. We must learn about discipline. Strict discipline in schools is very good for us. It teaches us obedience, punctuality, regularity, good manners and forbearance.
Diligence or perseverance is another important factor in student life. It is at the root of all success. If we are idle, we cannot prepare our lessons. An idle mind is a devil’s workshop. Idle men are never happy. Everybody hates them. All great men of the past were men of perseverance. Hence we must be persevering. If we fail once, we must try again and again. We must learn the value of time and should do everything in time.
Time and tide wait for none. If time is gone idly, we cannot get it back. Our work will not be finished in time. Hence we must not idle away our time. Obedience is also a great virtue of a student. We must be obedient and should do what our parents and teachers tell us to do for our good. Next in importance is the choice of the company. A bad company is dangerous, as a rotten mango can spoil a lot in its contact. So we must be careful so that we may not come in contact with bad company.
We must take care of our health, as health is wealth. If our health is bad, we cannot do anything properly. Our whole life will be miserable. And so we should take physical exercise, proper diet and have games and sports. We should have some hobbies too to get a greater dimension of our life.
Another important part of a student’s life is his social life at school. There he makes his friends in the classroom and on the playground. This exercises a great influence in moulding his character. One should remember the saying If wealth is gone nothing is gone if health is gone something is gone if the character is gone everything is gone.
Here he learns the important lesson of cooperation, social manners and caring for others. In our student life, we are free from cares and anxieties. Our main work is to read and play. And, of course, in higher classes, we may be involved in social and political awareness. But if we do not perform our duties well, we shall not be happy in future.
